I am still working on a name for this quilt. It evokes everything I love in quilts to me..old timey feel, cozy, homey, security, peacefulness. Allegany State Park does all that to me. As soon as we drive into the park, I can feel all tension and stress just disappear. It is a dream of ours to find a little place down near there for our own. I was thinking of naming this quilt for Allegany, but I can't pin down a name. Any suggestions? They don't have to have Allegany in the name...just something that evokes those feelings.
Now..I have a question for you. The block I used I have seen called both Single Wedding Ring and Crown of Thorns. Obviously, I did not make it up. I don't think there is a block left that could be made up. Anywho, I didn't make up the block, but I did choose the controlled scrappiness of it, and I did come up with my own layout and borders. So...does that mean I designed this quilt? When does someone become a quilt designer vs. just being a quilter? Is it in the layouts? I honestly don't know. If people ask where I got the pattern for this from, do I say I designed it? That almost sound pretentious to me. People like Bonnie Hunter are quilt designers..but doesn't even she pick an old block or two and establish her own way of putting them together? Sigh..this is getting complicated! I just don't want to take credit for "designing" this quilt, if I am just defining it wrong..someone HELP!!

ReplyDeleteI recognize the block more as the Single Wedding Ring block rather than the Crown of Thorns, just because I'm more familiar with that name. How about "Allegany Rings"?
I love your layout and colors and I'm like you in that I don't use EQ. I lay the quilt out and start playing with border colors and ideas til something seems right. I'm interested to see the comments when it becomes your design because I would also like to know. I'm not great with names but re-reading how it makes you feel "Circles of Peace" came to mind. Looking forward to seeing another picture.
ReplyDeleteI design most of my own quilts, but I use traditional blocks as a basis. So...my term is that "I designed XYZ based on traditional blocks," or "I designed Rikugien Paths based on the traditional Drunkard's Path block." Your way of using/coloring/arranging the block is uniquely yours; the block is part of the continuing quilt tradition.

ReplyDeleteYou've done a great job of completing projects in 2010. I was just looking over completed listing. I'm impressed. I've hardly completed anything. I'm hoping I can knuckle down today and get a doll quilt finished. The blocks are made but that's about it. Sigh. I'm suppose to get some sticker for the cars. Anyway -- great quilt. And, some good names too. B.
Your quilt turned out very nicely! The brown/brownish rings provide a good focal point. I have EQ, and upgrade each time, but I only use it when I'm stuck on a design. A lot of time I just plan quilts in my head.

ReplyDeleteJust my opinion but even with a traditional block if a particular artist made you add it to the TO-DO list, make a note of it b/c you will forget over time. I wish I have kept better records of some of my earlier pieces.
Over the years we tweek the favorites and as we inspire others it gets lost on who started it first. Beautiful quilt. cw
Wow, what a stunning quilt. I think you can call yourself the designer because it is an original layout, but I also like the suggestion above about saying something about it being based on a traditional block. What about a name like "Path in the Woods" - I see a path in the red.
